The run of the musical The Color Purple was sold out at the Joburg Theatre in March, but the production is coming back in August, while plans are finalised for a world-wide tour next year.
The additional performances will be at Joburg Theatre from August 7 to 26 2018. These will include seven special students-only daytime performances for youngsters aged 13 and over to join in discovering the treasures and lessons to be learned from this musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1983 Pulitzer prize-winning novel.
“This all-South African production of The Color Purple has been a huge career highlight for me,” says executive producer Bernard Jay. “I have been overwhelmed by the love and acclaim that Janice Honeyman’s brilliant staging has received. What better gift now than to know public demand for tickets has created additional performances at Joburg Theatre whilst we finalise negotiations for a worldwide tour of our production in 2019/20.”
This is the first time the musical has been performed outside the United States. Recently the three composer/lyricists came to South Africa to see the production.
The musical The Color Purple is based upon the 1982 novel written by Alice Walker and the 1985 motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg. The musical’s book is by Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.Recently Joburg Theatre and Bernard Jay welcomed songwriters Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, who came to South Africa to see the production. One year ago, they were together on the stage of the Staples Center in Los Angeles to receive their Grammy for The Color Purple as Best Musical Theatre Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony.
“Their visit, alongside the letter of support already written to us by Oprah Winfrey, further endorses the worldwide interest and enthusiasm that is being shown in our South African production of this glorious musical,” says executive producer Bernard Jay. “We are honoured and excited to play host to such esteemed writers and musicians.”
“The Color Purple is glorious amongst musicals in that it entertains and ultimately uplifts audiences to a state of sheer joy, whilst taking them on a passionate journey of an inspiring family saga – telling the unforgettable story of a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world.
